Our favourite Italian act ACTION DEAD MOUSE
are back at last with a brand-new brain-melting album « The Revenge
of Doormats and Coasters ». After a first effort
(« Pets and
Nerds Attack Planet Earth
» - Greed Recordings – 2007) that gathered critical
acclaim
as well as a warm welcome from the well-taught audiences of amateurs of
indie rock that flirts with anything labeled « post
» or
« math », the Italian quartet has put together
refined
arrangements and yet more precise compositions that blend the
singularity of Do Make
Say Think and the complexity of the sampling delights of Don Caballero or,
closer to us, Battles.
This time around, the grooooop has expanded its scope and, apart from a change in personnel with the wise addition of Michi from the well-known My Awesome Mixtape, succeeded in adding a thin gloss to their overall sound. Here the tracks bounce around displaying an untame joy, just like a horny octopuss on a heavy diet of Vitamin C. The savvy looped guitars rub themselves against a drumset that knows how to oscillate between the calm and the storm and the subtile groove of a bass that swirls in the corners, sometimes heavy and sometmes aerial. In each track, an unexpected break, a wistful violin, the comforting whistle of a trumpet or the liberating sprawl of a ragged voice, take the listener by surprise, leaving him breathless and different, definitely like the first cigarette after some good lovin'. ![]() |
