The
man behind the creation of Greed Recordings, Moonman is a prolific
musician who refuses to be pigeon-holed in just one category and is
involved in a number of different but complementary projects .A first album, “Manipulators” (Greed Recordings – 2003), is praised by specialized press as the manifesto of a bewitching power based on introspective folk songwriting akin to Will Oldham or Nick Drake, direct but nonetheless complex indie pop not too far from the likes of Pinback, some hints of electronica which could be linked to Warp artists and an adventurous and free spirit always seeking experimentation and surprising sounds.
This visceral need for sound exploration will give birth to the “Pièces pour guitare préparée” series (Greed Recordings – 2003/2005), an intriguing trilogy based on repetitive and contemplative motifs mainly played on alternately tuned guitars, distilling an improvised and demanding music calling to mind Steve Reich, Fennesz or Aerial M. These recordings are available in mp3s or in their physical version on the site of the label under Creative Commons License.
After numerous gigs, both acoustic and electric (notably with Angil, Zita Swoon, Dana Hilliot, etc...), the brand-new album , “Necessary alibis” (Greed Recordings – 2006), more live performance oriented, shows once again a savoir-faire blending indie-rock, deviant pop, folk songwriting and controled experimentation to join the likes of Sonic Youth, Wilco, Jim O’Rourke or Sebadoh.
With production and engineering help from Duncan Robert and Gilles Deles (Half Asleep, Angil, Melatonine, Dana Hilliot, Lunt...), Moonman creates a fascinating universe made of interwoven guitars, subtle arrangements (strings, brass, glockenspiel, mellotron...) and existential wanderings with lyrics alternating allegories and caustic realism. It is also the meeting of Moonman and Lunt (Unique records) for a final track as a challenging guitar duel with a captivating background of spoken word voices.
